Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed rock fortress rising dramatically from the surrounding jungle, nearly two hundred metres above ground, capped with the ruins of a fifth-century royal palace built by King Kasyapa. The climb up its sheer face rewards visitors with ancient frescoes, the famous Mirror Wall, landscaped water gardens below and sweeping panoramic views across the plains from the summit.
