Minneriya is home to ‘The Gathering’, one of the largest seasonal congregations of wild elephants in Asia, drawn to the shores of an ancient reservoir as the dry season shrinks surrounding water sources. The spectacle typically peaks between July and October, when several hundred elephants can gather at once, making it one of the most dramatic wildlife events anywhere on the island.
