Udawalawe is a dry-zone park famed for large herds of wild elephants roaming open grassland beside a vast reservoir, alongside the neighbouring Elephant Transit Home, which rehabilitates orphaned calves for release. It is one of the most reliable parks on the island for elephant sightings, with sightings virtually guaranteed on most safaris, making it especially popular with families and first-time visitors.
